Kid's Report

Taisei Kanno

I went to a school overseas for the first time and I was amazed. Primary school, junior high school and high school were in the same place and the site was big, which was totally different from Japan.

I was astonished today.
First of all, I was surprised that the primary school, junior high school and high school were in the same place. It was also surprising that they called the grades from Year 1 to Year 12, which was different from Japan.
And also, the site was huge. It should be because the primary, junior and high school were in the same place.
I visited the Japanese, Italian and English classes. I found a lot of people who can speak Japanese. The Japanese teacher spoke Japanese as good as a native Japanese person.

I went to a boys school for the first time of my life!!

Today, I was surrounded by boys in a class room!!
Some students could speak Japanese fluently, I was amazed that they could do it even though Japanese was not their mother language.
There were school rules but students were studying in relaxing mood, even though the system of school was same as mine, which meant the junior high school and the high school were combined.
I liked the atmosphere.
I saw a lot of scenes which I could never seen in Japan, such as the teacher told the students to sit on tables or cushions rather than chairs.

I enjoyed communicating with many students there.

First impressions;
The number of students per classroom was not big.
We don't call Year 7 in Japan.
They don't have text books!?
It's free! They can sit down on the floor and desks!

Reflections;
We went to the only boys high school in Cairns today.
The total number of students in school was big but there were not so many students in each class.
I was surprised that they were taller than Japanese students and they called Year 7 instead of Year 1 in junior high school.
The boys tried to talk slowly, so that we could enjoy communicating each other.

For dinner, we cooked together.
We made Italian food. Actually I didn't like avocados and tomatoes but I could enjoy them this time!

The school in Australia was huge!
I was believing one of the staff as a student.
We went shopping to OK Gift Shop.

The school boys took the initiative to talk to us.
I explained how to fold origami cranes in Japanese. I think I could do it well.
In the P.E. class, we played T-ball. I hit the ball quite strongly.
Italian class was very hard, and I could only understand, "quattro" means 4.
I think I could make a conversation in English quite well.
In a gift shop, I found the flavour which was Australian limited.

I saw the Australian boys high school for the first time.

I went to school from early morning today. I got a bit tired because I hadn't been to school a week, lol.
We joined from their 2nd class which was Japanese. And they took us around inside the building. It was huge!
After that, we did a communication game. We needed to match their faces and names, which was hard!
Before the next class, there was a time called "morning tea". During the 25 minutes, a lot of students visited us and shared some snacks, which was fun! I wanted to share more.
The next class was P.E. I actually didn't like T-ball though, I tried my best! However, we lost the game. I enjoyed it and made new friends!
The following class was Italian language. I did not understand anything but the classmates taught me gently. I liked the game called "Tombola".

The next class was English. I made new friends there as well. They wrote some plain sentences which even I could understand, lol. So that I don't need to bother them any more, I will do my best to study English!!
Before the English class, we had a lunch time. The students who came to us in the morning tea time came to us again and we enjoyed lunch altogether!!

After school, we went to OK Gift Shop. Sometimes we ran on the way, it was so fun.
We browsed a lot of items there. I always cannot decide soon, and the time limit was only 30 minutes...lol.
Everybody assisted me and I managed to buy something for Japan! I hope the people in Japan like them.

After we went home, we went to Izakaya. I got treated a lot!! Thank you very much, it was yummy!

We visited a school today. I was surprised at everything. First of all, they showed us around the school. It was huge!! I was surprised that the chairs and desks were different designs between classes. During the class, some students were lying down on cushions. And they didn't use their text books or note books. It was unbelievable in Japan. We taught how to fold origami cranes. It was hard to teach though, I was satisfied that I could do it well. During I was teaching, they tried to communicate with me in Japanese, which I was glad.

We did a game in Japanese class. We asked the class mates their names and nicknames in Japanese, and asked their favourites. I was amazed that they could speak Japanese very well. I thought a lot of students played rugby in Australia.
Next class was P.E. We played T-ball. I was glad, because I belonged to the soft ball team in Japan. However, I couldn't give a good hit actually... Anyway, I really enjoyed it.
The following class was Italian language. We did a bingo game. I was surprised that they called "Uno" for "1". I managed to communicate with my buddy.
The following class was English. We made some groups in the class. Each group was made of 1 Japanese student and 3 Australian students. I had no idea what they were speaking...
And I couldn't communicate well. One of the boys showed me his laptop and told me to say something to it. I realised that it was important to say whatever I could.

It was a fulfilling day today. It was good that we could communicate with the students in the same generation. In Japan, we hardly raise hands and speak up in the class. However, they were willing to raise their hands in Australia. I was surprised. And they were always smiling. I thought, if I tried to communicate actively, I should be able to smile like them. Anyway, be active!! I will do it.

We went to OK Gift Shop. I found a lot of Australian items and enjoyed shopping.

First impressions:
By visiting local Australian school and participating in classes, I was able to learn the differences between schools in Japan and Australia. At the school we visited, there were only 5 minutes between classes. There were recess times of about 30 to 45 minutes in morning and afternoon. There wasn't anyone that had bento lunch like in Japan. Also, in Cairns, there seemed to be many mixed people. I saw at least one student in every class who had dark hair.

Reflections:
I didn't think schools in Australia were very different from that in Japan, but I did feel that Australian schools felt more like universities. In the library, there was space for discussions, and it felt very open and spacious. There was a cafe, too, and it looked like a fun school. It was an all-boys school. There were some students who wanted to talk to girls, yet once girls started to talk to them, they ran away. There was a student who gave us mandarins. It was interesting to see how there were so many different responses to girls. I wondered whether similar things happen in all-girls' school. Also, the school's bell sounded like siren, and it surprised me at first. I was also surprised that many students could speak Japanese. I wondered whether Australian schools teach language other than English, or the equivalent of us learning English in Japan.

The OK Gift Shop was a store with a really good atmosphere. There were a range of products from stationery to watches. There were so many lovely items that I struggled to make up my mind what to get. Masa was very kind and helped explain the products to us. I am very thankful that they gave us a 20% off discount. I want to cherish the koala soft toy that Masa gave us, and the other koala soft toy that Catherine gave me. I am also thankful to Sanae. She talked to me about many interesting things while waiting for Catherine. Thank you so much. I want to keep working hard towards my dreams.

It was very fun day today. Thank you very much.

I went to foreign school for the first time!

I was in Japanese, PE, Italian, English class. In Japanese class, we asked each other about food, drinks and places...etc. that we like. I was surprised that there were many good Japanese speakers. Also impressed by the students who write Kanji well.
In PE class, we played tee ball. I am good at baseball kind, so played my best. No regret on my swing and batting and defence went well, too. I was so happy that I became close to a student over this team play!
Italian class was difficult. I was impressed by the students who was using Italian so well. I listened so hard in English class. I want to study more and improve my English skill.

And the most impressed was lunch time! I had lunch and Japanese sweets with them and enjoyed fun time! I was really happy that I made many friends!

It was very thankful that I received 20% off at OK gift shop. I bought a lot because of that. it was so satisfying!

-little story- We walked to Franklin Island's office to say thank you as they took care of us so well but no one was there and couldn't say anything after long walk...

Thank you very much wonderful day!
